California’s Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) program, funded by state and local transportation agencies, reduces time stuck in traffic, fuel costs, and smog! The program assists stranded motorists and clears accidents from California freeways, often within minutes.
Effective January 2024, Governor Newsom’s Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulations have cut off the supply of new trucks even though truck manufacturers have not developed electric alternatives to meet a tow truck’s range, performance, and safety standards.
So, as the current inventory of 2024 truck chassis is depleted, new towing and recovery trucks will not be built or sold in California.
Ironically, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) exempted government-owned towing and recovery trucks. Private-sector towing companies were not so lucky.
FSP contractors are subject to fines, penalties, and contract loss without new trucks. As a result, small businesses and suppliers will have no choice but to lay off workers and potentially go out of business.
Urge the Governor and the California State Legislature to save a freeway program FREE to millions of California motorists.
